Montenegrin Olympic Committee has, along with the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education and Cycling Club Perun, celebrated the Olympic Day (June 23rd) in Niksic. The participants and guests were welcomed by the Dean Stevo Popovic at the Faculty of Sports and Physical Education, where he expressed his gratitude to the MOC for many years of successful cooperation. Our golden Olympians Andrija Popovic and Igor Vusurovic have spoken about the significance of the Olympic Day and olympism. They wished our athletes much success, with hope that many get the Olympic visa for the Games in Rio, so that our selection grows in number. The manifestation was held on lake Krupac, where a number of athletes and sport officials participated. There were cyclists, judoists, scouts, para-cyclists, then water polo, athletic, volleyball and soccer players. On behalf of the host city, the participants and guests were greeted by the City Hall's President Veselin Grbovic, who wished that the athletes fulfill their dreams. He reminded everyone that Niksic's athletes have achieved great results on the international sports scene for decades. Golden Montenegryn Olympian Igor Vusurovic, the Director of Youth and Sport spoke about the importance of Olympism and olympic values, while the event was officially opened by the MOC's Vice President Andrija Popovic, who pointed out that the MOC celebrates the Olympic Day with special attention. Mr. Popovic expressed his desire that even more athletes go to the upcoming Olympic Games and bring back new medals. In his speech, he reminded about the July 7th, 2007 when the International Olympic Commitee has officially accepted the Montenegrin Olympic Committee to the Olympic Family. With this even, MOC joins the global action to celebrate the Olympic Day on June 23rd. On that date, in 1894 in Paris, at the initiative of the founder and inspirer of the Olympic thought Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the IOC was founded. "Sport is no luxury, not something that has to be done“– words from Coubertin, in which generations of young people have found, and are still finding inspiration. Three supporting conceptual pillars, and also the messages that the Olympic Day carries since 1948 when it was first celebrated, are: MOVE, LEARN and DISCOVER. Through these simple, and yet fundamentally profound advices, the aim is to promote the benefits of a sports lifestyle, physical activity; to inspire people to be active, to discover new sports that will embrace the Olympic values regardless of people's personal abilities, conditions and environment. Olympism is more than just a sport – it is a philosophy of life, based on a balanced relationship of the mind, body and will. By linking sport with culture and education, the Olympism implies the joy that comes from effort, the educational value of being a good example and respecting universal ethical principles. Its goal is to put sport at the service of the harmonious development of a man, while promoting a peaceful society which is concerned with the preservation of human dignity. The Olympic Day is celebrated all over the world: hundreds of thousands of people – both young and old – take part in sports and other activities. The aim of the event is to promote participation in sport globally. Photo gallery.
