Montenegrin water polo team was defeated in the quarterfinals in Tokyo, after three consecutive semifinals at the previous Olympic Games. Popular "sharks" lost a match against Greece 10:4 (1:0, 2:1, 3:1 and 4:2). More than 13 minutes without a goal and a rather ineffectual game with an extra player (0/10), cost the Montenegrin national team a more favorable outcome in this match. Greece was superior in the pool, even with the fact that goalkeeper Slaven Kandic was the best player of our team. Montenegro managed to equalize only once, at the beginning of the second quarter, but this was soon followed by a wave of five consecutive goals by Greece, for a lead 6:1. As for the Montenegrin team, Aleksandar Ivovic scored two goals, while Drasko Brguljan and Uros Cucković each scored once. As for the next phase of the Olympic tournament, Montenegro is scheduled to play in a fifth to eight place event, against Croatia.
