In a significant move towards promoting inclusivity and integration, the UNHCR Representative in Montenegro, Mr. Jean-Yves Bouchardy, and the President of the Montenegrin Olympic Committee (MOC), Mr. Dusan Simonovic, recently convened to discuss collaborative efforts aimed at leveraging sports as a tool for integrating refugees and stateless persons into Montenegrin society. Since 2022, Montenegro has been extending temporary protection to Ukrainians, making it one of the top five European countries hosting the largest number of Ukrainian refugees per capita. With approximately 100,000 individuals from Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus finding refuge in Montenegro since then, this influx represents 16% of the country's population. Additionally, Montenegro is also home to a significant number of ex-Yugoslav refugees, asylum seekers, and stateless persons. Recognizing the transformative power of sports in fostering social cohesion and providing a platform for empowerment, the meeting between UNHCR and MOC sought to outline collaborative activities geared towards integrating refugees and stateless persons through sports initiatives. One of the key discussions revolved around joint actions to commemorate World Refugee Day on June 20th and Olympic Day on June 23rd. By aligning these important dates, the UNHCR and MOC aim to raise awareness about refugees' plight while celebrating the universal values of solidarity, resilience, and determination epitomized by the Olympic movement. Among the attendees were Mr. Mensur Bajramspahic from UNHCR and Ms. Maja Pekovic from the Montenegrin Olympic Committee, signifying both organizations' commitment to working together towards a common goal of protecting and supporting the most vulnerable members of society. Speaking about the meeting, Mr. Bouchardy emphasized the importance of harnessing the unifying power of sports to break down barriers and foster a sense of belonging among refugees and stateless persons. He reiterated UNHCR's commitment to collaborating closely with MOC to create inclusive sporting opportunities that promote social inclusion and well-being. Mr. Simonovic echoed these sentiments, highlighting the role of the Olympic movement in promoting peace, solidarity, and respect for human dignity. He expressed MOC's readiness to support initiatives that harness sports' potential to facilitate the integration and empowerment of refugees and stateless persons in Montenegro. As discussions continue, UNHCR and MOC remain steadfast in their commitment to leveraging sports as a catalyst for positive change. They share a vision of building a more inclusive and cohesive society where everyone, regardless of background, can thrive and fulfill their potential.
